More about this set
About the set
- Issued in 1959, numbered A 1–A 295, 295 cards in all. A long and common set.
- Sold in wrappers marked "Serie A". A Swedish wrapper reads "10 världsberömda filmstjärnor i strålande färger" (ten world-famous film stars in brilliant colours). A French-language wrapper with "Stars de cinéma" also exists.
Variants and printings
- The 20 hard numbers also exist without the "A".
How to recognise
- With a dot: A.1–A.50, A.151–A.255, and the common blocks from 261 up (A.261–A.265, A.271–A.275, A.281–A.285, A.291–A.295).
- Without a dot: A 51–A 150, and the hard blocks from 256 up (A 256–A 260, A 266–A 270, A 276–A 280, A 286–A 290).
Numbers to know
- Twenty numbers are hard to find: A 256–A 260, A 266–A 270, A 276–A 280 and A 286–A 290. Everything else is common.
- From A 256 upwards the set alternates in blocks of five: hard, common, hard, common. A.261–A.265, A.271–A.275, A.281–A.285 and A.291–A.295 are as easy as the low numbers.
- Each of the 20 hard numbers is also listed as existing without the "A", at the same difficulty. The same 20 pictures are in 1962 Numbered Set 3 (1-300) without the A, where they are easy to find. Whether the "without A" cards are those or a separate printing of this set is unclear.
Related sets
- 1961 A Set (Sans Serif): the other A set of these years and easy to confuse with this one. Its numbers read "A . 102", with a space before the dot.
- 1962 Numbered Set 3 (1-300): has the 20 hard pictures with the same numbers but no "A", and they are easy to find there. It does not have the common blocks A.261–A.295. Its No 296–300 go beyond this set, so collectors sometimes fill the hard gaps from it and stretch the run to 300.
