D Set (Name in Script)

Hard to complete. D 1 Doris Day has three different pictures, all among the hardest cards together with D 8 Diana Lynn and D 27 Jane Russell; two of them repeat the C 6 pictures of 1952 C Set.

More about this set

About the set

  • Issued in 1952, numbered 1–35. The total is given both as 38 and as 39 cards, so the exact count is unclear. The listed pictures (35 numbers, two extra on D 1, the mirror-image D 35 and the straight-type D 14) add up to 39.
  • Same kind of pictures as the 1952 C Set.
  • In Holland the cards were collected in small "hollywood strips" albums. A matching Dutch album is said to exist for this set and the C set.

Variants and printings

  • D 35 has a mirror-image version.
  • Two styles of italic lettering occur.
  • Some cards exist both with and without the studio name.
  • Cards No 1–35 were also issued in Holland on thick card with small capital letters.

How to recognise

  • The star's name is in italic lettering, found in two different styles, as on the C set.
  • D 35 Joan Caulfield is a landscape card with the name printed vertically.
  • Dutch copies on thick card with small capital letters are shorter than the regular cards.

Numbers to know

  • D 1 Doris Day has three quite different pictures: a white blouse, a yellow blouse and a close-up. The yellow-blouse and close-up pictures are the same as the two C 6 pictures.
  • A Doris Day D 1 is named as one of the few pictures found only in the Dutch thick-card issue. How it relates to the three D 1 pictures above is unclear.
  • The hardest cards are the three D 1 pictures, D 8 Diana Lynn and D 27 Jane Russell.
  • The most common are D 3–7, 9–13, 15–18, 20, 21, 28, 31 and 32.
